In classes, students will learn Kathak with a holistic approach, as passed down to Labonee by her Guru, Pandit Chitresh Das:

  • Technique - This is the most important foundation to develop in the beginning.  Focus on different type of footwork, exercises, Kathak vocabulary, types of pirouettes, body movements.
  •
  • Taal - Students must learn the complexity of the North Indian classical rhythmic system in order to dance Kathak.  Emphasis on structure of taal and associated mathematics behind it.  They will learn a variety of compositions, tihais, and recitation in accordance with their progression.
  •
  • Body Positioning and Awareness - This aspect is learned over time as the student learns, practices, and matures.  Will teach how to bring grace & subtlety to movements.
  •
  • Storytelling - Kathak is traditionally a storytelling art form, and students will learn how to tell stories of Ancient India through Kathak dance.
  •
  • History, Philosophy, Culture, Music - To understand the full picture of Kathak, students must learn the context of the art form, including the history and culture from which it comes, and the philosophy behind it.  Kathak is not just dance, but it's a meditation in motion and a yoga of life.
